As you know, I am a professional RI home inspector. I provide outstanding service for a fair price. I offer several ancillary services too. They are related. If I sell you a service, I actually do it. (with the exception of running the lab test, but I deploy, retrieve, ship, and control the circumstances of samples)

One type of service I don’t currently offer is the sale of YOUR INFORMATION. Some inspectors sell services they don’t provide, like alarm systems and home warranties. Many of these “services” offer an opt out clause of some sort. Many aren’t what they are cracked up to be.

Would you be upset if you hired a professional inspector and started receiving telemarketing calls or emails? That’s what can happen, inspectors try to make more money by offering you a service through a third party vendor and are compensated in some way. Not me!

If you want the name of a vendor, contractor, repair man, or service provider of some kind, I invite you to contact me and ask. If you tell me to have them call, I will, if you want their number from me, fine. I’m here to help you and do my job, nothing else.

So when you see a “free service” from a home inspector, is it free? Are they serving you or is a third party company mining their data for sales leads? Are they getting someone else to do the work?

Ive seen inspectors have realtors pick up radon test equipment for them. You presumably hired a professional, unbiased inspector to inspect, not a realtor to inspect. Don’t have your real estate agent put in an awkward spot by asking them to do my job. They get paid for their own job, as do I.

When you hire your inspector ask questions, know what you’re getting.
